One Skill This Weekend · Free activity
Let your child plan one family meal.
A small way to practice planning, money decisions, and shared responsibility. An adult sets the budget and supervises shopping, food preparation, and tools.
The 20-minute plan
- Choose. Agree on one meal and how many people it should serve. Adapt for dietary needs and ability.
- Check. List ingredients you already have. Pick a realistic spending limit together.
- Estimate. List what you need to buy and estimate the total. Compare choices before an adult approves spending.
- Divide. Decide which tasks your child can do safely, where you will help, and when the meal will happen.
- Reflect. After trying it, ask: “What changed between your plan and what actually happened? What would you do differently?”
A worked example
Illustration, not a customer story: A parent sets a $15 limit for a four-person pasta meal. The child checks the cupboard, lists tomatoes and vegetables, and estimates the cost. If the total is too high, they compare alternatives together. Actual prices vary. The adult handles payment and cooking supervision.
Write down: our meal · our limit · what we have · what we need · estimated total · who does what · what changed.
